Gogh at The Armory Show"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Though over 20 years after his death, <a title=\"Van Gogh Gallery\" href=\"http:\/\/vangoghgallery.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Vincent van Gogh<\/a> was still not known by most Americans at the time of the 1913 New York Armory Show.\u00a0 The Van Gogh works displayed were mainly from the period of his hospitalization at St. Remy from 1889 to 1890.\u00a0 There were also a number of Provencal studies of olive groves as well as several of his Parisian still life paintings.<\/p>\n<p>Though he had been dead since 1890, <a title=\"Catalog of Van Gogh Work \" href=\"http:\/\/www.vangoghgallery.com\/catalog\/\" target=\"_blank\">Van Gogh&#8217;s works<\/a> were viewed by the public as &#8220;new and very surprising&#8221;.\u00a0 Some critics of the show who knew of <a title=\"Van Gogh's Death\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vangoghgallery.com\/misc\/death.html\" target=\"_blank\">Van Gogh&#8217;s suicide<\/a> found it as proof that creators of Modern Art must be crazy.\u00a0 This new strange style of art was considered a threat to custom, tradition and wholesome American values.<\/p>\n<p>Visitors to the Armory Show had the opportunity to purchase reproductions of some of the works they saw at the show.\u00a0 One such reproduction was a photo of Van Gogh\u2019s <em>The Dance Hall in Arles<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"The Dance Hall in
