She was the mother of a five year old little girl, was pregnant and had been deserted by the baby\u2019s father.\u00a0 Sien posed for a number of drawings and paintings for Van Gogh, these reflected the difficult life of the working poor.\u00a0 As payment for modeling, Van Gogh provided Sien and her daughter with a place to stay and food to eat.\u00a0 He eventually took her, along with her child, into his home.<\/p>\n<p>Sien had a number of health related issues, including venereal disease which she probably passed on to Van Gogh.\u00a0 In June, he spent 3 weeks in the hospital with a bout of gonorrhea.\u00a0 On July 2, 1882, Sien gave birth to a son and named him Willem, after the artist.\u00a0 The woman had four children only 2 of whom lived.\u00a0 Van Gogh did his best to nurse Sien back to full health and even considered marrying her thinking it the best way to care for her.<\/p>\n<p>When <a title=\"Van Gogh's Father\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.vangoghgallery.com\/index.php\/2015\/03\/18\/vincent-van-goghs-father-reverend-theodorus-van-gogh\/\" target=\"_blank\">Van Gogh\u2019s father<\/a> learned of the relationship, he pressured his son to abandon the woman and her children, but he refused until finally in the fall of 1883 when following his brother Theo\u2019s urging, he abandoned Sien and her children to paint in Drenthe.\u00a0 Sadly, his relationship with Sien was to be the only domestic relationship Van Gogh experienced.<\/p>\n<p>Following Van Gogh\u2019s departure, Sien gave her daughter to her mother and gave the baby boy to her brother.\u00a0 She moved to Delft and then to Antwerp resuming her life as a seamstress and probably fell back into prostitution.\u00a0 Later Sien told her son that Van Gogh was his father; though it is believed that the dates make this an impossibility.\u00a0 She married Anton van Wijk in 1901, and on November 12, 1904 drowned herself in the Schelde River in Rotterdam\u2019s harbor 14 years after Van Gogh\u2019s death.<\/p>\n<p>The drawings and paintings of Sien portray her in domestic roles, mother, seamstress and domestic worker.<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><a title=\"Sien Nursing Baby\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vangoghgallery.com\/catalog\/Drawing\/1481\/Sien-Nursing-Baby.html\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 2px; border: 2px solid black;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vangoghgallery.com\/catalog\/image\/1064\/Sien-Nursing-Baby.jpg\" alt=\"Van Gogh Drawing - Sien Nursing Baby\" width=\"200\" align=\"left\" border=\"2\" hspace=\"2\" vspace=\"2\" \/><\/a><\/td>\n<td><a title=\"Sien, Peeling Potatoes\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vangoghgallery.com\/catalog\/Drawing\/1484\/Sien,-Peeling-Potatoes.html\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 2px; border: 2px solid black;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vangoghgallery.com\/catalog\/image\/1053a\/Sien,-Peeling-Potatoes.jpg\" alt=\"Van Gogh Drawing - Sien, Peeling Potatoes\" width=\"200\" align=\"left\" border=\"2\" hspace=\"2\" vspace=\"2\" \/><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><a title=\"Sien with Child on her Lap\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vangoghgallery.com\/catalog\/Drawing\/1493\/Sien-with-Child-on-her-Lap.html\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 2px; border: 2px solid black;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vangoghgallery.com\/catalog\/image\/1071\/Sien-with-Child-on-her-Lap.jpg\" alt=\"Van Gogh Drawing - Sien with Child on her Lap\" width=\"200\" align=\"center\" border=\"2\" hspace=\"2\" vspace=\"2\" \/><\/a><\/td>\n<td><a title=\"Sien with Cigar Sitting on the Floor near Stove\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vangoghgallery.com\/catalog\/Drawing\/1492\/Sien-with-Cigar-Sitting-on-the-Floor-near-Stove.html\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 2px; border: 2px solid black;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vangoghgallery.com\/catalog\/image\/0898\/Sien-with-Cigar-Sitting-on-the-Floor-near-Stove.jpg\" alt=\"Van Gogh Drawing - Sien with Cigar Sitting on the Floor near Stove\" width=\"200\" align=\"left\" border=\"2\" hspace=\"2\" vspace=\"2\" \/><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Van Gogh met Clasina \u201cSien\u201d Maria Hoornik at the end of January, 1882.
