{"id":1122,"date":"2013-01-22T07:00:26","date_gmt":"2013-01-22T13:00:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/small-vase.flywheelsites.com\/?p=1122"},"modified":"2017-03-18T10:10:48","modified_gmt":"2017-03-18T16:10:48","slug":"van-goghs-birth-place-zundert-netherlands","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.vangoghgallery.com\/index.php\/en\/2013\/01\/22\/van-goghs-birth-place-zundert-netherlands\/","title":{"rendered":"Van Gogh\u2019s Birth Place: Zundert, Netherlands"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Vincent Willem van Gogh was born on March 30, 1853 in a village in the southern part of the Netherlands in the province of North Brabant.\u00a0 The flat land of North Brabant was dotted with villages surrounded by cultivated land.\u00a0 It was here that Van Gogh\u2019s love for the landscape began with Zundert\u2019s fields, heath, swamps, and forests of beeches.\u00a0 His identification with nature, the simple life, with farmers and the countryside, originated during his childhood in Brabant.<\/p>\n<p>Van Gogh was born in the municipality of Zundert, one of the most agricultural areas of the Netherlands, in the village parsonage on Zundert\u2019s main street, Markt 29, located across the street from the town hall.\u00a0 The original home, a seven room house, one of the biggest in the village, was too dilapidated to preserve and was torn down in 1903 in order to build a new parsonage.\u00a0 A plaque made by Niel Steenbergen hangs on the outside of the building to commemorate Van Gogh\u2019s birth.\u00a0 The <a title=\"Vincent Van Gogh Huis\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vangoghhuis.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Vincent Van Gogh Huis<\/a> is now located on the site of the original home.\u00a0 The arts centre celebrates the life and works of Van Gogh.<\/p>\n<p>Van Gogh didn\u2019t paint while a child in Zundert, in fact he didn\u2019t determine to become an artist until the age of 27, but it is clear that he had begun to show an interest in art long before that time.\u00a0 As a boy in Zundert, Van Gogh created a number of sketches.\u00a0 Though many of these sketches are not officially catalogued with numbers, they are classified as Juvenilia.<\/p>\n<p>Van Gogh had fond memories of his years in Zundert.\u00a0 On October 3, 1876 in a letter to his brother Theo, Van Gogh exclaimed,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cO Zundert!\u00a0 Memories of you are sometimes almost overpowering.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In another letter to Theo in February of 1877, Van Gogh wrote,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cFather wrote that he had already seen starlings. Do you still remember how they used to perch on the church at Zundert?\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The small Dutch Reformed church in Zundert, where <a title=\"Van Gogh's Father\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.vangoghgallery.com\/index.php\/2015\/03\/18\/vincent-van-goghs-father-reverend-theodorus-van-gogh\/\" target=\"_blank\">Van Gogh\u2019s father<\/a> preached in 1849 is still standing today.<\/p>\n<p>At the age of 12, Van Gogh left Zundert for boarding school in Zevenbergen though he would visit the small town again many times over the years.<\/p>\n<p>Today visitors can still see some of the <a title=\"Van Gogh sites in Zundert\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vangoghgallery.com\/in_his_steps\/netherlands.html\">Van Gogh sites in Zundert<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Letters:<br \/>\n<a
