Over the past few weeks, there has been a lot of coverage in the news about a Van Gogh self-portrait (Self Portrait with Straw Hat, 1887), shown below, which is now thought by the Van Gogh Museum to be a portrait not of Vincent, but instead of his brother Theo van Gogh. The findings come from research by the Van Gogh Museum research team and as part of the exhibition “Van Gogh in Antwerp and Paris: New Perspectives,” which opened at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam on June 22 of this year. It is thought that the painting was “the companion painting” to Van Gogh’s Self-Portrait, 1887 in which he is wearing a grey felt hat. The differences in the two portraits pointed out by the museum are in the beards as well as the eye color and ear shape. If the research proves true, this would be the only known portrait that Van Gogh painted of his brother Theo. The exhibition runs until the 18 of September 2011, so if you are in the Amsterdam area this summer, be sure to take a look to see for yourself. If you can’t make it to the exhibition, read more about their research here.

This summer when the weather is too hot to be outside and the kids are looking for things to do, taking a trip to a museum can be a nice way to get out of the sun and soak up some culture. This year there are no shortage of Van Gogh exhibitions and related events to take in while you escape the heat and summer boredom.

In the United States, the Cincinnati Art Museum is having a special exhibition currently running titled Conserving Van Gogh. During designated times, visitors will have an opportunity to see Van Gogh’s painting Undergrowth with Two Figures, 1890 undergo stabilizing and cleaning by chief conservator Per Knutas.

If you are in Europe, the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam has an incredible collection of Van Gogh’s works in addition to several special exhibitions such as Van Gogh’s studio practice: Canvases re-used and Bedroom secrets: Restoration of a masterpiece both opening June 10 as well as Van Gogh in Antwerp and Paris: New perspectives opening June 22.

The National Gallery in London is taking Van Gogh outdoors this summer by recreating the artist’s famous painting A Wheatfield with Cypresses out of plants on a wall outside the museum.

If you happen to be in Korea, the exhibition Dream and Reality: Masterpieces from Musee d’Orsay opened in the Seoul Art Center’s Hangaram Art Museum on Saturday and runs through September 25. The exhibition features Van Gogh’s Starry Night Over the Rhone as well as famous works by Monet, Renoir, Degas, Cezanne, Gauguin and others.

These are just a few of opportunities museum goers have to see Van Gogh works this summer. If you know of others in your area, please comment and share!

Completing its tour of Japan next year will be the exhibit Van Gogh: the adventure of becoming an artist. With works from the Van Gogh Museum and the Kröller-Müller Museum, this exhibition examines Van Gogh’s techniques as he developed as an artist. In 2011, this exhibition can be seen at the Kyusyu National Museum from Jan 1 – February 13 and then at the Nagoya City Art Museum from February 22 – April 10.

From March 24 to May 20, The Van Gogh Museum and the Keukenhof Gardens are offering a special promotion called Van Gogh in bloom for visitors to see the “Blossom” exhibition at the Van Gogh museum as well as the flowers at the Keukenhof including a flower mosaic of Van Gogh’s Self-portrait with felt hat. In addition the package price includes an canal cruise in Amsterdam as well as bus transportation in between Amsterdam and Lisse.

In August, Van Gogh’s Self Portrait with Felt Hat becomes part of the Masterpiece a Month: Presiding Genius exhibition at the Dulwich Picture Gallery in London. The Dulwich Picture Gallery, a gallery Van Gogh visited in 1873 while living in London, will display Van Gogh’s painting in 2011 as part of the gallery’s 200th anniversary.

Van Gogh’s paintings can be seen in museums and galleries all over the world, and while there really is no comparison for seeing his brushstrokes up close and in person, it is amazing how many excellent virtual Van Gogh displays exist online. Virtual tours have improved over the years now offering the viewer an ever greater perspective of the object and its surroundings. In this virtual tour of the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, you can see many of Van Gogh’s Sunflowers and the works hanging alongside of them all from the comfort of your computer. If you prefer to travel online to Paris a virtual tour of the Musee d’Orsay will take you the Van Gogh collection there.

If you would rather avoid the sometimes dizzying effects of the virtual tour, check out some of the interactive exhibitions online such as the “Van Gogh and the Colors of the Night” exhibition which took place a couple of years ago at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, but continues to display online. There are also a selection of videos on Van Gogh’s works and research on the Van Gogh channel on Art Babble. So if you want to experience the works of Van Gogh, but can’t make it to the museum, a Van Gogh tour may just be a click away.
