It is rare that we discuss the work of other artists, besides Van Gogh, on this blog; however, this work is frequently mistaken as a Van Gogh. It is a common misconception that Van Gogh created the painting titled The Scream. With Halloween having just past, we have had another influx of people contacting us and searching our website with this idea, but Van Gogh did not create this painting. In fact, The Scream was painted three years after Van Gogh’s death. So who is the artist that painted this work? Norwegian artist Edvard Munch (1863-1944) painted The Scream in 1893 and a series of other paintings and prints by this name. Although Munch was an Expressionist he was influenced by the works of earlier Post-Impressionists, including Van Gogh, on a trip to Paris in 1889. To learn more about Munch, please visit our Edvard Munch page, or find Edvard Munch prints including The Scream.

Van Gogh created almost 900 paintings during his lifetime; however, of these paintings, a certain few continually standout as favorites among most individuals. Van Gogh admirers will travel from far and wide to see these particular works located in museums all over the world. And summer is the perfect time to visit museums both to stay out of the heat and take in some of Van Gogh’s best.

Van Gogh often created multiple paintings of the same subject such as sunflowers. For these works, we have picked a couple to highlight in our top ten. Another interesting item of note is that although Van Gogh painted hundreds of works over the course of the years from 1881-1890, nine out of the top ten were created during the years 1888-1889. During this time, Van Gogh was living in France – first in Arles and then Saint-Rémy-de-Provence.

So what are some of his top paintings, and where can you see them? View the list below as we count down the

I recently received another inquiry about some drawings owned by a Van Gogh Gallery visitor. The four drawings shown were sent to me with the following inquiry:

“I purchased 4 pencil drawings some years back at a flea market. They aren’t signed but 3 different museums have said that they are late 1800′s and look to possibly be Van Gogh. I wanted to send you three pictures. Two are pencil drawings and one is a faint sketch on the back of a drawing. “

Our reader would like to get any feedback on these drawings, so if you recognize any of them as being drawn by a particular artist, whether it is Van Gogh or someone else, please share your expert opinions with us. We would love to learn more about these pieces. Please comment and share your thoughts.
